Decatur-based Mexican pan dulce bakery La Calavera announced on Facebook and Instagram that it is moving to the Kirkwood neighborhood on Memorial Drive in August. The new store is just a block from Ann’s Snack Bar and Wyatt’s Country BBQ burger joints.
“Our present-day place [on East College Avenue] is not best for attracting customers. Foot traffic has usually been low to none at our current place,” co-owner Dale Ralston tells Eater Atlanta of choice to relocate. “Our new vicinity is towards the neighborhoods wherein we offer our bread at farmers markets and in which we have advanced a strong client base (the Morningside and Grant Park Farmers Markets).”
The bakery, regarded for sweetbreads like concha, Marranos (pig-formed ginger cookies), and sprouted and top-notch sourdough bread, expects a few overlaps between the Decatur and Kirkwood shops through September. After September, Memorial Drive will become the bakery’s sole region.
Ralston and baker Eric Arillo have owned La Calavera for over five years and say the Kirkwood bakery will be similar to the Decatur vicinity. However, the couple plans to offer more organized meals, add a cold pastry case, and door seating in Kirkwood. La Calavera’s Mexican molletes Sunday breakfasts may also be held at the new keep.
Upon entering the bakery, customers seize a silver tray, region their selected pastries and pieces of bread at the tray, and play on the counter. Besides promoting baked goods, pan dulce treats, empanadas, and bread, La Calavera also provides coffee and constrained seating.
“We desire that the folks that go to us at weekend markets so faithfully will now locate it handier to come back see us on the bakery for the week,” Ralston says. “We also desire that our cutting-edge bakery regulars will find the new spot nearby sufficient to keep traveling us there. It’s handiest four miles away and smooth to get to.”
